French placement tests online
French placement tests online estimate your CEFR level from A1 to C2, and the free ones measure different things, so take one listening test and one grammar test and trust the lower result.
Most learners read French a level or two above what they can hear. A grammar test flatters you; a listening test with real spoken French tells you what happens in a café.

How we rank
We rank apps by who they genuinely suit, what they cost, and how much they help with the skill learners neglect most: understanding real spoken French. Every price and fact was checked on the product's own site or app store listing on the date shown; where a price is not shown publicly we say "see site". Nobody pays to be listed or ranked, and there are no affiliate links. More about this site.
Questions
How can I find my French level for free?
Take a free listening test, such as the French with Amélie test (8 clips, 2 minutes), and a grammar test such as KwizIQ's, then compare the two results.
Are online French placement tests accurate?
They give a useful estimate, not an official result. Only an official exam such as the DELF, DALF or TCF gives a certified level.
What do the levels A1 to C2 mean?
A1 and A2 are beginner, B1 and B2 intermediate, C1 and C2 advanced. At B2 you follow most conversations on familiar topics; at C1 you follow fast, informal French with little effort.
