Which is better for beginners?
Mondly for most adults who want to say useful things quickly. Its short daily lessons are built around phrases and mini conversations, with speech recognition and a chatbot to practise answering, taught in English. Rosetta Stone teaches by immersion from the first lesson, with pictures, words and speech recognition and very little English. Learners who like to work out patterns themselves may prefer Rosetta Stone; many adults find the lack of explanation frustrating.
Which is cheaper?
Mondly, on the yearly plan. The US App Store lists Mondly Premium at $15.90 a month or $74.90 a year. Rosetta Stone was €19.99 a month or €159 a year when we checked from Germany. Compare both on the same day, since both run offers.
Which gets you speaking sooner?
Mondly, slightly. Its chatbot makes you produce answers in simple conversations, while Rosetta Stone's speech recognition checks words and short sentences. Rosetta Stone is slow to reach anything conversational.
Which takes you further?
Neither goes far. Both cover roughly A1 to B1, Mondly is thin past A2, and Rosetta Stone's immersion approach is slow. Plan your next step early.
Which teaches real spoken French?
Neither. Mondly's audio is recorded slowly for learners, and Rosetta Stone's is built around short sentences. Neither prepares you for French at normal speed.
Can you use both?
There is little point. Both are beginner apps covering roughly the same ground, one with English explanations and one without. Choose the style that suits you and spend the rest of your time on listening and speaking with people.
What neither does
Neither app explains French grammar in depth, plays real-speed French, or gives you a person to talk to. Both stop around B1. Use one to get started, then add a course with explanations, real listening and regular conversation.
