Babbel lifetime: is the one-off plan worth it?

Babbel lifetime is worth it only if you are sure you will still be using Babbel in three years: at €299.99 once, it pays for itself after about two years and nine months against the 12-month plan (€107.88 a year), checked from Germany on 9 October 2026.

Checked October 2026 · Babbel price: From €8.99/mo on the 12-month plan (€107.88 a year; €215.88 at the monthly rate); lifetime €299.99; first lesson free (checked 2026-10-09 (babbel.com/prices, shown from Germany))

The numbers

Lifetime: €299.99, paid once, on the day we checked.

12-month plan: €8.99 a month, billed €107.88 a year. Three years cost €323.64, so lifetime saves about €24 if you stay three years, and more after that.

Monthly billing: about €215.88 a year at the monthly rate shown on the same page. Against that, lifetime pays off in about a year and five months.

Babbel runs offers on lifetime from time to time. If you are considering it, check the price on a few different days; a discount changes the break-even point a lot.

Why most people should not buy it

Most language apps are used hard for a few months and then rarely. Babbel's French course is strongest from A1 to B1; once you reach B1, the course matters less and real listening and conversation matter more. If that takes you two years, the yearly plan costs less than lifetime.

Billing was the biggest complaint in the 500 most recent App Store reviews we read (57 of 203 one- and two-star reviews), and lifetime does remove renewals. But a one-off payment for an app you stop using is still money spent.

When it makes sense

If you are learning more than one language with Babbel, or you are a slow, steady learner who expects to use the app for years, lifetime is the cheapest way to do it. Check what the lifetime plan includes on the prices page before you buy.

If you are unsure, start with the 12-month plan. You can still buy lifetime later; you cannot get a refund on three years you did not use. See is Babbel worth it for who the course suits, and Babbel cost for every plan.

Who it's for

Steady learners who already use Babbel and expect to keep going for three years or more, and people learning several languages on it.

Who it's not for

Beginners who have not yet used Babbel for a month, and anyone whose goal is real spoken French. For that, money is better spent on listening and a tutor; see Lingopie or italki.
