Babbel vs Rosetta Stone for French (2026)

Babbel is the better choice for most adults because it explains French grammar in English as you go. Rosetta Stone suits a beginner who prefers to learn by pattern and immersion, with almost no English, and does not mind a slower route to conversation.

Which is better for beginners?

Babbel, for most adult beginners. Its lessons are short, built around real situations, and explain grammar in context in English, so you know why a sentence is put together the way it is. Rosetta Stone teaches by immersion from the first lesson: pictures, words and speech recognition, with very little English. Some people like working out the patterns themselves; many adults find the lack of explanation frustrating.

Which is cheaper?

Babbel. When we checked from Germany, Babbel was €8.99 a month on the 12-month plan (€107.88 a year) and Rosetta Stone €13.25 a month billed €159 a year, or €19.99 month to month. Both also sell a lifetime plan (Babbel €299.99). Both run frequent offers, so compare the full year, not the first month.

Which takes you further?

Babbel. Its curriculum runs from A1 towards C1, while Rosetta Stone covers roughly A1 to B1 and is slow to reach anything conversational. Babbel also adds speaking practice built around situations you will meet. If your goal is to hold a simple conversation within a few months, Babbel's path is more direct.

Which teaches real spoken French?

Neither. Babbel's dialogues are scripted and recorded for learners, and Rosetta Stone's speech recognition checks your pronunciation of words and short sentences rather than training you on natural speed. Neither app plays real-speed French between native speakers, which is what you will hear in France.

Can you use both?

You can, but there is little point. Both are beginner courses covering the same ground in different styles, so using both mostly means paying twice for A1 and A2. Pick the style that suits you, Babbel for explanations or Rosetta Stone for immersion, and spend the rest of your time on listening and speaking.

What neither does

Neither app prepares you for French at real speed or for a conversation you did not rehearse. Both teach with clean audio made for learners, and neither gives you a person to talk to. Add a podcast or show with French subtitles for your ear, and a tutor or exchange partner once you can say a few sentences.
