Duolingo French: how far it takes you, honestly

Duolingo's French course takes a committed learner from zero to about A1–B1: you will read simple French, know a few thousand words and handle basic grammar, but you will not follow two French people talking at normal speed. It is a good first step and a poor last one.

What the course covers

Short lessons that mix translation, listening, word-matching and speaking into the microphone, arranged in units with stories and practice sessions. The grammar is taught by example rather than explained: you notice the patterns before anyone names them. The course is free in full; Super removes ads and the limits.

The French itself is clean and correct but artificial: short sentences recorded for learners, often unrelated to each other. That is what makes it easy to start, and also why it stops working once you need real conversation.

How far it gets you

Our reading is A1 to B1. By the end you can read a simple text, write short messages and understand slow, clear French. What you cannot do is follow a café conversation, a film without subtitles or a French podcast at normal speed, because spoken French drops and links sounds that Duolingo never makes you hear.

The App Store reviews say the same thing in their own words. Of the 500 most recent we read, 11 asked how they were supposed to learn to speak; only 9 mentioned French at all, which tells you most people judge Duolingo as a habit, not a language course. Some reviewers also blame a recent drop in content quality on AI-written sentences; we look at that in is Duolingo effective.

What to add

Keep Duolingo for five minutes a day if you like the streak, and add one thing it does not do. For listening, use an app with real-speed French and a transcript; our French listening apps page ranks them. For speaking, book a weekly tutor on italki or Preply. For grammar explained properly, a structured course such as Busuu or Babbel.

If you have finished the tree and feel stuck, that is normal: our Duolingo alternatives page is organised around exactly that moment.

Who it's for

Complete beginners who need a painless daily habit and their first few hundred words, and anyone returning to French after school who wants a free warm-up before something more serious.

Who it's not for

Learners at B1 and above, and anyone whose goal is understanding French people in real life. Duolingo's audio is slow and scripted, so it will not train your ear for the speed and contractions you hear in France.

Questions

Can you become fluent in French with Duolingo?

No. Duolingo gets a committed learner to about A1–B1. Fluency needs real-speed listening and unprepared conversation, which it does not provide.

How long does the Duolingo French course take?

It depends on your pace; daily learners usually take many months to a couple of years to finish it. Finishing the tree does not mean you can follow spoken French.

Is Duolingo good for French grammar?

It teaches grammar by example, not by explanation. If you want the rules spelled out, pair it with a grammar resource or a course such as Busuu or Babbel.
