Duolingo is not a waste of time if you use it as a daily habit for beginner French, its French is mostly accurate, and it is very much alive; it becomes a waste of time when it is the only thing you do for French after the first year.
Checked October 2026 · Duolingo price: Free; Super from $9.99/mo or $79.99/yr (checked 2026-10-06 (US App Store))
Is Duolingo a waste of time?
Not in the first months. Ten minutes a day builds a basic vocabulary and gets you used to French sentence patterns, for free. It turns into a waste of time when you keep collecting streak days at the same level: by then you need real listening and real conversation, which Duolingo does not provide.
A quick test: put on two minutes of a French podcast for learners from our podcasts page. If you follow most of it, Duolingo has done its job and you should spend that time on listening. If you follow little of it, Duolingo alone will not close the gap either.
Is Duolingo's French accurate?
Mostly, yes. The sentences are grammatical and the audio is clear. The weaknesses are naturalness and context: sentences are short, often odd, and recorded for learners rather than taken from how people speak. In the 500 most recent App Store reviews we read, 12 complained about content mistakes or a quality drop, some blaming AI-written sentences.
If a sentence looks strange, check it in a grammar reference such as Lawless French or ask a tutor. For accurate, natural French at real speed, use a French listening app with native speakers.
Is Duolingo dead?
No. The app and the French course are running and updated. The searches spiked after Duolingo's own marketing staged the death of its owl mascot in 2025, and again when the company's announcement that it would lean on AI drew a backlash from users. Neither changed the free French course.
What to do instead of quitting
Keep Duolingo for five minutes if you enjoy it and add the piece it skips. The Duolingo alternatives page sorts other apps by what they add: real listening, speaking with a person, or a course with grammar explained. If you only want to know whether to pay for it, see is Duolingo free.
Who it's for
Beginners in their first year who need a free daily routine. For them Duolingo is time well spent, as long as they add real listening early.
Who it's not for
Intermediate learners who can already read simple French. For you the extra streak days have stopped paying off; move the time to listening and conversation.

Questions
Is Duolingo a waste of time for French?
Not as a beginner's daily habit. It becomes one when it is the only thing you do after the first year, because it does not train real listening or conversation.
Is Duolingo French accurate?
Mostly. The French is grammatical but simplified and sometimes unnatural. A few recent reviews report mistakes they blame on AI; check odd sentences in a grammar reference.
Is Duolingo shutting down?
No. The searches came from a 2025 marketing stunt about the owl mascot and from a backlash to its AI announcement. The app and courses continue.
