Duolingo is effective at one thing, getting a beginner to study French every day and learn a basic vocabulary, and ineffective at the thing most people want, which is understanding and speaking French with real people. Judge it as a habit tool and it does its job; judge it as a whole course and it falls short.

What it does well
It removes the hardest part of starting a language: showing up. Lessons take a few minutes, the streak and leagues keep you coming back, and the whole French course is free. For a beginner, a few months of daily Duolingo builds real recognition of common words and sentence patterns, and makes reading simple French feel possible.
It also gets you saying French out loud early, through speaking exercises, which many textbook learners avoid for years.
What it skips
Real spoken French. Duolingo's sentences are short, clean and recorded for learners. People in France speak fast, drop sounds and link words together, and an ear trained only on Duolingo audio struggles with that. Our realistic range for the course is A1 to B1.
Unprepared conversation. Typing or saying a sentence the app expects is not the same as answering a question you did not see coming.
Grammar explained. Duolingo teaches patterns by example. That works for simple structures and leaves gaps on the harder ones, such as the subjunctive or the past tenses.
What the reviews say about quality
In the 500 most recent App Store reviews we read, 12 complained about mistakes in content or a drop in quality, several blaming AI-written sentences. That is a small share, and we could not verify individual cases, but if you notice odd sentences, check them against a grammar reference such as Lawless French before you learn them.
The larger complaints were not about learning at all: hearts and energy (26), price and cancelling (24) and ads (17).
How to make it effective
Give Duolingo one job, the daily habit, and give the other jobs to tools built for them: a French listening app with real-speed audio and a transcript, a weekly conversation on italki or Preply, and a course such as Busuu or Babbel if you want grammar explained.
Who it's for
Beginners who need a reason to study every day, and returning learners who want a free warm-up. It is most effective in the first three to six months.
Who it's not for
Anyone at B1 or above, and anyone whose goal is to follow French people at normal speed. For that, see our Duolingo alternatives, sorted by what Duolingo skips.

Questions
Does Duolingo actually work for French?
For habit, beginner vocabulary and reading, yes, to about A1–B1. For listening at real speed and conversation, no; add tools that do those jobs.
Is Duolingo better than a course?
It is better at getting you to show up and worse at explaining grammar and taking you further. Babbel and Busuu cover more grammar; both still need real listening alongside.
Has Duolingo got worse because of AI?
Some reviewers say so: 12 of the 500 recent App Store reviews we read complained about content mistakes or a quality drop. Most complaints were about hearts, price and ads.
