Lingopie is one of the better ways for an intermediate learner to get hours of real-speed French every week, through French TV and films with clickable subtitles, and a poor choice for a beginner; it costs €12.99 a month, €38.97 for three months, €77.94 a year (standard price €155.88) or €219 for lifetime, after a 7-day free trial (lingopie.com/pricing, 9 October 2026).

What it is
A streaming app for language learners. You pick a French show or film, watch it with French and English subtitles, and tap any word to see a translation and save it as a flashcard for review. The catalogue mixes French TV and films with shorter content made for learners, sorted by level.
The difference from Netflix with subtitles is the tools: dual subtitles, a click-to-translate dictionary, replaying a single line, and review of the words you saved.
What it does well
Real-speed French. Most French learning apps use scripted audio recorded slowly for learners; Lingopie puts you in front of French as it is spoken on screen, with the support to follow it. That is the skill most learners neglect, and the reason people who can read French still cannot follow a conversation.
Habit. If you already watch TV in the evening, swapping one episode for a French one is easy to keep up.
Where it falls short
It is not a course. There is no grammar, no path from A1, and a beginner will understand too little for the subtitles to help. Our reading of its useful range is A2 to C1, best from B1.
Watching is not studying. An episode you half follow is entertainment unless you stop, replay and review the words you saved. Learners who get the most from it watch less and replay more.
Price and trial

Who it's for
Intermediate learners, from about A2 and best from B1, who will actually watch French TV most evenings and want help following it.
Who it's not for
Complete beginners, who should start with a course such as Busuu or Babbel, and anyone who prefers audio they can take on a walk; for that, see our podcasts page or LingQ.
